Just so you know, it makes me very, very happy to bring you this. Putting this together was an absolute blast. I went through my 300+ cd collection, then through Joebob's 300+ cd collection, and found the best moshing sections of those cds that I could find.
Before I go into this, I should properly define what a "mosh section" is.
What a mosh section is: It is the heavy part near the middle to the end of the song that everybody can't wait for, and goes nuts when it finally arrives. Ya know, "That one part".
What a mosh section isn't: It isn't a main riff, or a heavy chorus. There are plenty of songs that have very heavy riffs during and throughout the song, but they may not have a good mosh section or a mosh section at all (like "Scars" by Machine Head or that one "Due to the graphic nature of this program" song by Fear Factory).
You know what I'm talking about, right? Of course you do.
Criteria used to determine favorite mosh sections:
1. Heavyness - This is pretty obvious. Heaviness is the result of guitar riffs, drum licks, bass, and vocals all written in such a way that it just SOUNDS HEAVY. A good riff with a bad drum beat will take away from heavy, just like a lame riff with a good drum beat will. Everything *clicks* on a good heavy part. This category is responsible for making you bob your head and give you the scrunchy face... like this:

2. Intensity - This has more to do with emotional volume. The more intense it is, the more it sucks you in. A song doesn't have to be heavy to be intense. Glassjaw, for example. This category is responsible for making you feel violent. For example, this is an intense look:

3. Creativity/Memorability - A good mosh section will always be known as "that one part" or "that cool heavy part". If you remember "that one part" more than the song itself, then it's probably pretty memorable. Throwing in cool fills? Creative rhythms? Throwing off headbangers by adding in an extra beat? Cool sounds? These all fit here. If you remember it, then it probably scores high in this category. Here's an example of a memorable picture:

Now, one last thing:
THESE ARE MY 20 FAVORITES.
Not yours. Do you understand? Are you SURE?
You are, of course, totally welcome to list your personal favs in the comments or on our messageboard. But any elitists who wish to criticize my choices or insult me because I haven't heard their favorite no-name underground band from Sveegenharflin will automatically get called "a deplorable wanker that engages in intercourse with various barn animals and/or furniture".
With that aside, let the sonic carnage begin!
#20: "Trick" by Stuck Mojo (from "Rising") - Listen!
This has always been one of my favorites. All around well-written, nice starter for the deathy clips that follow. RAWWRRR!
#19: "Deceived" by Colepitz (from "Self-titled") - Listen!
A nice heavy section from a no-longer existing indie band called Colepitz from the east coast. Too bad they broke up, they had an excellent cd. KILL! LOTS!
#18: "Domination" by Pantera (from "Cowboys from Hell") - Listen!
This is simply a classic heavy section. The whole song is a fast-paced shredder, then all comes down to the slow, march-like tempo and a simple, yet totally memorable "Jug-jug-jug, jug-jug-jug". Near the end, they did some creative guitar panning to make it even more memorable. This section might be the reason we have mosh sections like the Remembering Never clip you'll hear later.
#17: "Roots" by Sepultura (from "Roots") - Listen!
ROOOOOOOOOOOOTS! BLOODY ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTS!
I had to say it. You can say it too, if you want. I'll wait.
......
Okay, this clip is a brutal way to end a brutal song. Guaranteed to leave you with the scrunchy face.
#16: "Davidian" by Machine Head (from "Burn My Eyes") - Listen!
This is pure, head-bobbing heavy; crunchy guitars chugging away at a moderate tempo in a way that makes you think, "Yeeeeaaaahhh....".
It goes a long time until it finally fades out. A nice end to one of Machine Heads best songs. "Diggety-gah-dut-dut Diggety-gah-dut-dut..."
Man, I love that.
#15: "Surfacing" by Slipknot (from "Self-titled") - Listen!
I know you've heard this before (probably plenty of times), but you just gotta love it.
#14: "Running Board" by Dillenger Escape Plan (from "Calculating Infinity") - Listen!
Lots of metal guys like to describe heavy stuff as "sick". Well, this noise-fest is probably one of the only songs worthy of such a title. SUPER-BARF SICK!
Fun Fact: while playing this song, Gawkman's roomates punched couch cushions, jumped off of counters, and general scared my cat.
#13: "Lifer" by Down (from "NOLA") - Listen!
Down's first cd is excellent. The middle of this song off of it just jams out and makes you think, "Hell yeah!" Or if it doesn't to you personally, perhaps it brings to mind a really tasty pastry.
#12: "Imperium" by Machine Head (from "Through the Ashes of Empires") - Listen!
Machine Head's latest album goes back to their roots, and here's the proof. Take a listen to this ass-beater. Try not to kill any innocent bystanders.
#11: "Too Cold" by Vanilla Ice (from "Hard To Swallow") - Listen!
Yes, this is not a joke... and I'm not appologizing for putting this in here. Despite the fact that this cd's purpose was to mooch off of the old KoRn/Limp Bizkit/Deftones trend from a few years ago, this song was still suprisingly good.
During this part, in addition to being extremely heavy w/ nasty guitar harmonics and slides, it's a heavy rendition of ICE ICE BABY! C'mon... you like it. Admit it.
#10: "The Perverted Beast" by Darkane (from "Insanity") - Listen!
Quite possibly the coolest riff ever, set to a head-bobbin' groove. You can't help but think, "That's just f***in' COOL!"
If you find any more riffs like this out there, please let me know.
#9: "Fallen" by Hope Conspiracy (from "Endnote") - Listen!
One of the most intense build-ups I have ever heard. They build and build, tease you, build some more then finally let it fly. An added bonus is that they use a soundclip from the movie "Falling Down". You can hear Michael Douglas yelling at the two gangsters, "Clear a path, motherf***er! I'm going home!" (awesome movie, by the way)
This probably would have scored higher if it wasn't for the early cut-off. I HUNGER FOR MORE DEATH-KILL!
#8: "The Color Of Blood and Money" by Remembering Never (from "Women and Children Die First") - Listen!
HEAVY! SOOOOO.... DAMN....... HEAVY!!!!
#7: "Proven" by Hatebreed (from "Perseverence") - Listen!
Hatebreed just knows how to write it. I dare you to not want to mosh with yourself to this one.
#6: "Severed" by Chimaira (from "Pass Out of Existence") - Listen!
There's heavy. Then more heavy. Then they stop, then there's more heavy. This is what's it's all about, right here. Ya know... the mosh pit thing. That's what I was referring as "it" in the saying "that's what IT'S all about". Just wanted to make that clear. Ya know. Cuz sometimes people don't catch what I'm saying, and I have to explain it. Like now. Then it's not funny anymore.
#5: "Future Breed Machine" by Meshuggah (from "Destroy, Erase, Improve") - Listen!
What makes this so great is not just the bombastic pummelage of this section, but the fact that the entire song is heavy, but with no steady beat... which creates tension. The resolution of that tension in this song is extremely gratifying. This is a song that gets those guys who don't usually mosh to mosh during this part. Then they later say, "Man, I don't usually mosh... but I moshed during that part!"
#4: "Creating Something Out Of Nothing Only To Detroy It" by Norma Jean (from "Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child") - Listen!
"LIKE BRINGING A KNIFE TO A GUNFIGHT!!!"
Beware, you'll have this climatic song ending stuck in your head for a while after listening to this. This is brutal, and it repeats, changing things up slightly to throw you off, then going back into it and pounding yer face in. This one goes for a while... at a show, you'll be very tired by the end of this song.
Kayn has confessed to punching his truck while listening to this part. Thus we coined it, "Truck-punching heavy", which is really just a variation of another phrase we coined called "floor-punching heavy".
#3: "Villains" by Nothingface (from "Audio Guide to Everyday Attrocity") - Listen!
I never get tired of hearing this song. This song probably qualifies as having the longest mosh sections out there... it IS the last half of the song. The riffs are have a very catchy, "Man that rules!" sound to them. It gets intense, and doesn't let up for the rest of the song. VERY exhausting live.
#2: "All I Had I Gave" by Crowbar (from "Live + 1") - Listen!
GOOD GAWD! This is simply the heaviest thing I have ever heard. I saw Crowbar live once, and when they played this song, it was even heavier than what you're hearing. Just listen, you'll see what I mean.
HOW CAN SOMETHING POSSIBLY BE THAT HEAVY?!? *punches floor*
#1: "Facing What Consumes You" by Hatebreed (from "Rise of Brutality") - Listen!
It was a hard choice to determine the #1, but it couldn't be denied. There's only one reason a band would write something like this, and that reason is to inspire absolute violence in a huge crowd. This is the kind of thing that will create thousand-people moshpits at festival shows. This has a very impressive buildup to the craziest mosh section I've ever heard.
Hats of too Hatebreed... BRINGER OF MOTIVATIONAL HEAVYNESS!
Comments!
This is STUPID! You forgot my favorite band, "SCHNEEGLOOO!" They play that one song that nobody knows except me, so why didn't you know it?!
Erase this review NOW!
YOur number one is Hatebreed? the band that has written the same four damn songs on every record! You need some heavy ass riffs with technical guitar and some solid thrash chords...justa slow open guitar chord over and over again does not make it in the the mosh hall of fame dude...Maybe some but you have about 16 that are all the same...
not impressive at all
Guitar chugging is all good but you need some variety man...weaknesssss

Har har, NO! Psychostick is a stupid dumb band that should not even try! LOSERS!

definatly not
THe Pit Police: Per the warning in my review, you are REALLY a deplorable wanker that engages in intercourse with various barn animals and/or furniture.
For god's sake, do any of you know how to read or do you just criticize all day?
Your only defense to the situation is that one phrase that you must think is insanely clever and well thought out...
im actually kinda dissappointed...
maybe we could have had a serious music discussion but i guess ill leave it to you to tear down musical disagreements with homosexuality

He didn't say homosexual, he said intercourse with animals/furniture. Maybe they're female animals/furniture.
Your stupidity, Incuthrice, is beyond measure. The whole point of Gawkman's review was to state HIS 20 favorites, not the be-all, end-all list. You were encouraged to offer your own list rather than simply berate him... yet you resort to childish name-calling.
What a prick.
I was looking forward to hearing some cool parts of songs I may not have heard recommended... it's a shame that fans of the underground genres like metal would rather compulsively and irrationally bash another's likes in a "poser witch-hunt" for a never-ending quest to be more "underground" and "independent minded" rather than taking the opportunity to plug some of their own favs.

wtf is a mosh section.
i'm pretty sure the "mosh section" you speak if is generally recognized by the majority of the hardcore/metal scene as a breakdown... look it up if you don't believe me.

Gawkman picks out his favorite "heavy parts" of all the heavy songs he's ever heard. The process of selection revolved around the amount violence invoked in roomates, erupting into living room mosh pits.
